People collect all sorts of things, from the very cheap to very expensive, from very simple to very complicated, from very old to brand new. It all comes down to personal choice: what you like and enjoy.
A collection can be something unique for everybody to share or something simply for you. They take time to build, as well as lots of patience to really know and understand what you do and don’t like. And it’s very likely that over the course of time, your taste and interest will change. A collection is not something static; rather it is something active, unique and highly personal that changes with you as you get older.
A wine cellar is a collection. You have items you intend to keep for a long time because you know they are exceptional and you like them. You have certain bottles just because you happened to come across them on your travels. You have some bottles that you can’t recall why you have them, but you do, and they’re bound to be good.
You have bottles for the long term, perhaps because the year is important for you: marriage, the birth of a child or the passing of someone dear to you are common reasons but there are many more. The bottles will age with time, memories might fade; it doesn’t mean that the wine will necessarily go bad. Like everything else, some bottles age well some don’t and we don’t always know why. But does it matter? Everything passes on in the end.
